You have picked the saree. Now comes the part that actually decides how it looks on you: the blouse. The same saree can look traditional, modern, playful or regal depending on the neckline, the sleeve and how much handwork goes into it.
After thirty years of stitching blouses in our Vidyaranyapura workshop, these are the six necklines we stitch most during Diwali season, and the sarees each one works best with.
1. Boat neck

A wide, straight neckline that sits close to the shoulders. It is elegant without trying too hard and photographs beautifully in family pictures.
Works best with: silk, tissue and organza sarees with a heavy border, because it keeps attention on the drape and the pallu.
Tip: add a small zardozi or bead motif at the back to make it festive.
2. Deep back with tie-up (dori)

The front stays simple; the back does the talking. A deep U or V back finished with tassels on a dori is the most requested design for evening Diwali parties.
Works best with: lightweight organza, chiffon and net sarees where the pallu is sheer.
Tip: match the tassels to the saree's zari or mirror work so the back looks finished, not plain.
3. Sweetheart neck

A curved, heart-shaped neckline that softens the look and suits almost every body type.
Works best with: pastel sarees (peach, blush, powder blue) and floral embroidery.
Tip: keep sleeves short or elbow-length so the neckline stays the focus.
4. High neck (collar)

A closed, structured neckline that reads instantly royal. It has come back in a big way for festive wear.
Works best with: plain or lightly bordered sarees, especially in tissue silk, where the blouse becomes the statement piece.
Tip: this is where heavy handwork shines. A zardozi collar on a high-neck blouse can carry the whole outfit.
5. Square neck

Clean and modern, and one of the easiest necklines to wear for long hours of puja and visiting.
Works best with: cotton-silk and chanderi sarees for day functions.
Tip: pair it with puff or bell sleeves for a slightly contemporary feel.
6. Princess cut with sweetheart front

Seams that run from the shoulder down give the most tailored fit of any blouse. It is our go-to for bridal and heavy festive blouses.
Works best with: heavy silk and lehenga sets where fit matters most.
Tip: princess cuts need accurate measurements. Come in for a fitting or courier us a blouse that already fits you well.
Illustrations are for style reference. Every blouse we stitch is cut and embroidered by hand in our workshop.
Sleeves change everything
Once the neckline is decided, the sleeve sets the mood: short sleeves for a classic look, elbow length for comfort, puff sleeves for something playful, and sleeveless for evening parties. If you are unsure, bring the saree in and we will drape it and suggest options.
